What Not to Put in a Septic System

A septic system is a biological process in a box. It handles human waste, toilet paper, and household wastewater well, and it handles a surprising amount of other material badly. Most of what shortens a system's life is ordinary, well-intentioned household behavior rather than obvious abuse.

Never flush

  • Wipes of any kind, including those labeled flushable. They do not break down in a septic tank and they accumulate. This is the single most common non-degradable we find.
  • Feminine hygiene products, which do not decompose and add directly to the sludge layer.
  • Paper towels, facial tissue, and napkins — they are engineered not to break apart in water, which is the opposite of what a septic tank needs.
  • Dental floss, which tangles and traps other material.
  • Cat litter, including varieties marketed as flushable.
  • Cigarette butts, which contain filters that do not degrade.
  • Condoms, diapers, and any other plastic or synthetic material.

Everything on this list has the same problem: it enters the tank and never leaves except by pump truck, occupying volume that should be available for settling.

Keep out of drains

  • Cooking grease, fats, and oils, which solidify and thicken the scum layer and can clog the outlet.
  • Coffee grounds, which settle and accumulate without breaking down meaningfully.
  • Paint, solvents, thinners, and fuels, which kill the bacteria the system depends on and are environmental hazards in soil.
  • Pesticides and herbicides, for the same reason.
  • Unused medications, which should go to a pharmacy take-back program rather than a drain.
  • Excessive bleach or antibacterial cleaner in volume, which suppresses the biological activity in the tank.

Habits that matter more than people expect

  • A running or leaking toilet, which can add substantial volume every day and is the most common hidden cause of hydraulic overload.
  • Doing many loads of laundry in a single day rather than spreading them across the week, which pushes water through the tank faster than solids can settle.
  • Water softener regeneration discharge routed to the septic system, which adds volume with no treatment benefit.
  • Garbage disposal use, which meaningfully increases the rate the sludge layer builds.
  • Routing gutters, downspouts, or sump discharge anywhere near the drainfield, which saturates the soil the field depends on.

What is overstated

Normal household use of laundry detergent, dish soap, and ordinary cleaners in ordinary amounts is not a meaningful threat to a functioning system. Neither is normal use of a bathroom cleaner.

Septic additives are widely marketed and generally unnecessary. A working tank already contains the bacteria it needs, supplied continuously by ordinary use. Additives do not remove accumulated sludge and scum, which is the actual reason tanks need pumping.

The things that genuinely shorten system life are non-degradables, grease, excess water volume, and traffic over the drainfield. Focus there and the rest largely takes care of itself.

Are flushable wipes really a problem?

Yes. Wipes marketed as flushable pass through a toilet but do not break down in a septic tank the way toilet paper does. They accumulate in the tank and are among the most common non-degradable materials we encounter.

Do I need to use septic-safe toilet paper?

Most ordinary toilet paper breaks down adequately. Heavily quilted or extra-thick varieties break down more slowly. This is a minor factor compared to non-degradables and water volume.

Can I use bleach with a septic system?

Normal household use is generally fine. The concern is large volumes, such as repeatedly emptying substantial quantities into drains, which can suppress the biological activity the tank relies on.

Is a garbage disposal incompatible with septic?

Not incompatible, but it increases solids loading and should shorten your pumping interval. If you use one heavily, have the tank measured sooner rather than later to establish your real interval.
